How it works

Six rows, one hidden five-letter word. Type a guess (on-screen keys or your keyboard) and press Enter. Letters light up: green means right letter, right spot; yellow means the letter is in the word but elsewhere; gray means it's not in the word at all. Solve within six rows.

Opening-word science

  • Lead with common letters: E, A, R, O, T, S, and I dominate English words. Openers like SLATE, CRANE, or AUDIO test high-value letters fast.
  • Two openers are legal and smart: a second guess that tests five different common letters (e.g., OILED after CRANE) maximizes information before you commit.
  • Position matters: S loves the front, E loves the end, and H rarely starts words but often follows S or T. Yellow letters are position data, not just existence data.

The endgame

By row four, think in letter-position matrices: list what must be true, then find the word satisfying all constraints. If two candidates remain, pick the one that eliminates more letters on a miss — winning slowly beats losing informatively.

Is there a daily word?+

Currently every game draws a random word from our curated list — play as many rounds as you like. A shared daily word (everyone gets the same one) is on the roadmap.

Are plurals or obscure words included?+

The answer list is common, friendly five-letter words — no plurals-only forms, no obscurities. You should be able to get every answer with normal vocabulary.

How do yellow letters work with duplicates?+

Green matches are assigned first. Yellow matches use only the remaining copies of a letter in the answer, so an extra duplicate can be gray even when another copy is green or yellow.
